Sesame Seeds

Sesame (botanical name: Sesamum indicum) is perhaps one of the oldest crops cultivated by human being. It is estimated to be grown in the near east and Africa for over 5,000 years for cooking and medicinal needs. The oil was used in barter since it would preserve and store in the desert for years. It is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds.

At present world production is estimated to be about 3 million metric tons. Over 57% of the world production is in Asia. Most of the Asian production is in India and China. Africa grows about 20% of the world's sesame, with Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Mozambique being key producers.
